French media react to Cristian Romero's World Cup final display

Cristian Romero has been praised by French media outlet MAXIFOOT following his World Cup final performance in which the Tottenham Hotspur star helped Argentina lift the trophy.

Lionel Scaloni’s men more than played their part in arguably one of the greatest finals of all-time. After extra-time, Argentina and France were locked at 3-3 after Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe stole the show.

The South Americans ultimately won the penalty shootout to present Messi with the chance to get his hands on the trophy.

Messi has understandably taken many of the headlines. But Romero has received some plaudits from the French media after helping Argentina win.

The centre-back seemed to take a few gambles during the game. There were a few leaps into tackles which, on another day, could have landed Romero in a bit of bother.

But that should not take away from his all-round performance. Whoscored shows that he made nine clearances during the game. Remarkably, no other player on the pitch managed more than three.

MAXIFOOT gave his performance a 6/10 rating – no Argentinian defender was rated higher. And they outlined how impressive he was in the battles with the French forwards.

“Like his team, Argentina’s central defender did not hesitate to score his territory, such as a shock with Lloris at the beginning of the game,” they wrote.

“Perfect to assist Molina in front of Mbappé, he was authoritarian in his interventions and gave off a beautiful serenity in the duels. Even on the goals conceded, he has nothing to be blamed for.”

Spurs will hope defender returns ready to hit ground running

Tottenham fans will be intrigued to see how this World Cup win impacts Romero upon his return. He has been a colossal signing for Spurs. On his day, he is easily the best defender at the club.

But this World Cup triumph would have taken so much out of every Argentina player. You always got the sense that they were not just playing for themselves and their country, but also to give Lionel Messi the perfect send-off at World Cups.

They will now celebrate and breathe a huge sigh of relief at what they have achieved.

But Antonio Conte will hope that he returns to Hotspur Way ready to hit the ground running again.
