French media hammer on-loan Arsenal star with 3/10 rating, say he was 'bullied'

William Saliba has been handed some enormous criticism by French outlet GFFN, after the Arsenal loanee struggled for Marseille against Lazio.

Saliba, 20, joined Marseille on loan in the summer – but his form has been poor under Jorge Sampaoli. The latest showing is another example.

While his WhoScored stats suggest Saliba was solid, especially given Marseille kept a clean sheet against Lazio – GFFN had other ideas.

WhoScored say he completed 79 of his 87 passes. He also made five interceptions – more than any of his teammates – producing four clearances.

However, GFFN say Saliba was ‘bullied’ by Lazio and Italy striker Ciro Immobile – also claiming he wasted possession on numerous occasions.

“Lacked gumption in his performance. He was bullied and pulled too easily out of position by Immobile,” GFFN say, rating Saliba at just 3/10.

“He also frustratingly wasted possession at times. Notably, he was too easily outmuscled by Immobile for a big second half chance, blazing over.”

Is Arsenal loanee Saliba struggling, or harsh rating as Marseille draw?

Judging by the stats, Saliba’s rating is somewhat harsh. Defensively, he made numerous crucial interventions – against a brilliant ace Immobile.

Yes, Immobile did drag Saliba out of position on numerous occasions. But clearly, Sampaoli had tasked Saliba with keeping the Italian quiet.

The fact Marseille notched a clean sheet against a strong Lazio side, who sit in an impressive fifth in Serie A. His passing was good, despite the rating.

Only misplacing eight of 87 is impressive, and seven out of an attempted 12 long balls is hardly a stat that deserves a 3/10 rating. Harsh on Saliba.
