Aston Villa goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic is wanted by Ligue 1 outfit Nantes, according to a report by French outlet Vingt Minutes.
They report that the French side are looking for a new goalkeeper this summer and have the 29-year-old in their sights after he slipped out of contention at Villa Park.
Kalinic only signed for Villa in January but suffered a loss of form and saw Jed Steer take his place, where his heroics helped the club through the play-offs.
And it didn’t look like promotion to the Premier League would ease Kalinic’s lack of gametime – so it would perhaps be something of a relief for Dean Smith if he was able to offload him.
The report says that given Kalinic’s contract situation, Nantes may consider a loan swoop to be the best option.
That could well suit Villa in any case, if they’re not paying his wages and he’s still getting gametime somewhere else as this is a move that looked decent on paper but just hasn’t worked out.
Kalinic is a towering goalkeeper with international experience for Croatia but his Villa Park career has not really got out of the starting blocks.
Clearing Kalinic off the wage bill and getting a player who isn’t playing much away from the club would be a genuine boost for Smith, and could well aid his hopes of getting a new stopper in as soon as possible.
