Andros Townsend has admitted that he would be open to joining either Celtic or Rangers. The Crystal Palace winger is about to become a free agent, among many other Palace players. Townsend says he would consider a move to Rangers, and Defoe will excite fans with his comments from 2013.

Townsend, 29, has been an excellent servant to Palace over the last five years. But after 185 outings for the London club, Townsend is set to leave Palace on a free. He has a contract at Selhurst Park, officially, until June 30. It remains to be seen where Townsend could go this summer.

Speaking to TalkSPORT – as per the Record – he was asked whether he would entertain a move north of the border. Townsend responded, stating he would be open to it: “I’m open to everything. If there’s an option that fulfils my needs, I wouldn’t turn it down just because it’s in another country.”

Back in 2013, Defoe and Townsend were not only Tottenham teammates, but also both in the England fold. The winger regained a place in the England squad – before injury prevented him from featuring at the 2014 World Cup. Defoe, now at Rangers, labelled him “outstanding”.

“He’s been outstanding and for a young player to come into the team and have that consistency, staying in the team and playing like he did against teams like Chelsea, that’s fantastic. He was one of best players on the pitch that day,” Defoe told Tottenham’s website, eight years ago.

Is Townsend a good signing for Rangers – following Defoe comments?

Without a doubt. Rangers once again need a big squad as they embark on their quest in the Champions League. Out wide, Rangers do have numerous options. Beyond the first-team options of Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe, Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo – there are many other options.

Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie, Glenn Middleton and Jamie Murphy remain on the books – but all four could leave. Aribo and Arfield are better in midfield. Roofe is a striker. So while Rangers have options, Townsend would still be a brilliant signing. Him, Kent and Alfredo Morelos would be a top front three.
