Frederic Guilbert is yet to play for Aston Villa after joining the club for £5million in January, but he is expected to be a major part of Dean Smith’s plans next season and has posted on Twitter as he jets in.
The 24-year-old was signed by Villa in January for £5million (Birmingham Mail), but was immediately loaned back to SM Caen where he has since clocked 106 appearances in all competitions.
Following Alan Hutton’s departure, France Under-21 international Guilbert is expected to rival Egypt star Ahmed El Mohamady for a place on the right side of Villa’s defence.
Guilbert posted on Twitter ahead of Villa’s return to pre-season training, informing fans that he is travelling to the Midlands ahead of meeting up with his new teammates – minutes after Villa confirmed the signing of Matt Targett.
TBR’s view – Will Guilbert start for Villa?
Guilbert is certainly a very good player and has more than a decent chance of starting for the newly-promoted Premier League side, especially since Alan Hutton’s exit earlier this summer.
More than willing to get forward but astute in defence, Guilbert will fit in with Smith’s style of play which sees his full-backs get forward as much as possible.
It is shaping up to be a defence that incorporates Guilbert on the right, a new centre-back alongside James Chester and left-back Targett. A youthful, yet exciting defence.
