Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has been criticised by Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg for his performance against Sporting Lisbon last night.

Spurs were awful in the first 45 yesterday but came out all guns blazing in the second half. They took the game to Sporting after the break, but Lloris’ error for Marcus Edwards’ goal had done the damage already.

Sporting were very, very good in the first half last night. They controlled the ball really well, caused Spurs all sorts of problems, and deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute of the game.

Tottenham old boy Edwards had a pop at goal from a long way out and the ball crept in. Lloris, like many others in the stadium, was visibly disappointed as Sporting celebrated their lead.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s goal cancelled out Edwards’ opener and the game ended 1-1. Looking back, if Lloris had done better, Tottenham would’ve won the game.

Ljungberg pointed the finger at the France skipper and claimed that he’s responsible for the draw last night.

He said on CBS Sports on Paramount+ (26th October 2022, at 08:55 pm), as quoted by HITC: “It was quick play. Gomes goes into the middle of the park, it’s a long, long way out for Edwards.

“But I am sorry, Lloris you need to do better on that, especially when there is so much at stake.

“He has struggled a bit lately. I hold him responsible for the first one, then doing this (when he came out of his box) at the end of the game, sorry Lloris, that’s not good decision-making.”

Ljungberg’s right, Lloris should’ve saved Edwards’ shot last night.

The Frenchman is a fantastic goalkeeper, there’s no debate about that. He has saved Spurs on countless occasions over the years, but it has to be said that he makes quite a few mistakes every season.

Tottenham should start to plan for life without Lloris. We’re not saying they should get rid of him, but the Frenchman will turn 36 at the end of this year, and he can’t go on forever.

It will be interesting to see if Conte will demand a new goalkeeper in one of the next two transfer windows.
