Pepe Reina produced a masterclass on his Aston Villa debut as the Midlands side secured a valuable point away at Brighton on Saturday afternoon – and Frederic Guilbert has sent the Spanish veteran a cheeky message on Instagram.
Villa completed a move to sign 37-year-old Reina on loan from AC Milan until the summer after Tom Heaton suffered an injury against Burnley – ruling him out until the end of the season. Orjan Nyland had deputised, but Reina started on Saturday.
Kortney Hause did not enjoy the best afternoon and his mistake allowed Leandro Trossard to score from a tight angle, giving Brighton the lead at the break. Douglas Luiz’s stunning pass was smashed into the net by Grealish.
But it was Reina that helped save a point for Villa as he denied in-form striker Neal Maupay with an excellent one-handed save at his near post. Villa posted a video on their official Instagram account of Reina’s save.
Grealish’s goal – his ninth of the season in just 24 games – kept Villa within a point of safety, as they sit in 18th place on 22 points. Both Watford and West Ham United sit a point ahead of Villa on 23.
Guilbert, who played the entire 90 minutes as a right wing-back during the 1-1 draw, reacted to Villa’s video of Reina producing the excellent save – by questioning Reina if he really is 37 years of age.
