Newcastle are keen on a summer swoop for Bournemouth’s Scottish international winger Ryan Fraser, according to the Daily Star.
Fraser has enjoyed an outstanding season, racking up 12 assists in all competitions and the star report that he is in Rafa Benitez’s sights this summer.
That would be an ambitious bid but Newcastle did manage to convince Matt Ritchie to swap the south coast for the north east back in 2016 and that was when they were in the Championship.
They report that Issac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey are set to leave St James’ Park this summer and Benitez will use the money that raises to increase the creativity in his ranks.
And given that he has been largely working with workmanlike forwards for much of his time with Newcastle, that’s an understandable approach.
Miguel Almiron elevated the Magpies’ attack to a new level and Fraser is such a clear upgrade on any of the wingers already at the club that he would likely have the same impact.
Ayoze Perez runs his heart out and gets his fair share of goals, but Fraser’s devastating season puts him on another level to the Spaniard.
A diminutive duo of Fraser and Almiron would lift Newcastle’s attack to a new level and create some genuine excitement around the club – if Mike Ashley backs his manager in the transfer market, as he eventually did in January with Almiron.
