Fraser Forster hopes Celtic form can bring about international recall with England

Celtic loanee Fraser Forster is hopeful he can impress England manager Gareth Southgate with his displays in the Europa League and earn a Three Lions recall.

As per the Scotsman, Forster is not phased by competition from Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, Nick Pope, Tom Heaton and others, feeling that his European exposure can help his cause.

He said: “I’d love to be a part of the England squad. I’d never close that door. I’d always want that to be an ambition of mine. We went through in the Champions League when I was called up for the first time and, hopefully, we’re going through in the Europa League this year.

“They’re the matches you want to play in and that’s why we all love it when Celtic are in the Champions League. Does the England manager watch the Europa League? I don’t know Gareth Southgate’s TV preferences. But, if I play as well as I can, then the rest will take care of itself.”

TBR’s View – Can Forster’s European exposure give him the edge?

For a long time, the English goalkeeping landscape was dominated by Joe Hart, the only stopper who was regularly competing for the very top trophies.

Now, while England have more, young goalkeeping talent coming through, none of them are playing in European competition. Forster is, and that’s how he’ll hope to get the edge.

Southgate seems reluctant to call up players from the Championship, but would he do it from Scotland? Playing against a range of styles and top players in Europe can only help Forster, but the England boss is spoilt for choice in terms of English goalkeepers playing in the Premier League now.
