Fraser Forster a big fan of his potential Celtic replacement Joe Hart

Celtic are reportedly targeting a move for 75-cap England international Joe Hart.

Record Sport is reporting that Celtic chiefs have already been in touch to let Hart know of their interest in his signature, with the 75-cap England international set to become a free agent when his Burnley contract expires at the end of the month.

It comes after The Telegraph reported that Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is ready to take another look at Fraser Forster this summer after his excellent campaign at Celtic.

The Saints have concerns over the form of current stoppers Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn and Forster was sensational at Parkhead last term.

Of course, in an ideal world, Celtic would like Forster back full-time but considering the finances involved and Southampton’s potential U-turn, that looks an increasingly difficult deal to get done.

But if they were to sign Hart, they would at least be getting a man with Forster’s seal of approval.

The pair were England colleagues for a number of years and in 2016, weeks out from England and Hart’s disastrous Euro 2016 campaign, Forster was quoted by ITV as calling Hart ‘a fantastic keeper’ and hailing him as one of Europe’s best.

“He’s obviously a fantastic keeper and I think he is showing year in, year out, for Man City and England how good he is. He works really hard and it is obviously important as a group of keepers we pressure him and try to catch him up, but he has been fantastic how he has played in some of the Champions League games this year, making big saves in big moments.

“For me he is a top keeper in Europe.”

At the time, it was an accurate statement but Hart struggled that summer, and when Pep Guardiola shipped him out of City the 33-year-old’s career has been on a downward track.

Forster was in a similar boat, acting as Southampton’s third-choice stopper before his move to Celtic last summer rejuvenated his career.

Perhaps the same could happen for Hart if he decided to make the Glasgow switch.
