Frank McAvennie has warned Rangers on Open Goal that if they do consider a move to sign midfielder Jack Wilshere following the player’s West Ham United release – then they will need to sign him on a pay-as-you-play deal.

Wilshere, 28, is a free agent after it was confirmed on Monday that he had been released by the Hammers. The England midfielder then responded with a statement of his own, stating he had been fit for the majority of 2020.

The Daily Mail have stated that Rangers are yet to make a move for Wilshere though he has been continually linked with Steven Gerrard’s side. The Gers boss is renowned as being a fan of the midfielder, who was earning £100,000 a week at West Ham.

West Ham icon and former Celtic star McAvennie was asked about Wilshere’s potential move north of the border, and he responded by warning Rangers that they need to offer him a pay-as-you-play deal – given Wilshere’s injury concerns.

“His injuries have been terrible. He has been sitting on the bench a lot at West Ham, everyone knew what he was about. They can’t give him a contract for him to just sit on the bench, it would have to be pay as you play. He’s a top player,” McAvennie said.

TBR’s view – McAvennie is bang on, despite Wilshere’s claim

Unfortunately for Wilshere, even if he claims to be fit, he has not proven that he can incorporate minutes on the pitch while remaining fit. He lacks match sharpness, and may even need a mini pre-season when he joins a new side.

Putting his injury concerns aside, though, Wilshere would be an absolutely stunning signing for Rangers from West Ham. Whether a move goes through in the coming days remains to be seen.
