'He loves Everton': Lampard says Toffees 24-year-old has blown him away in training
Frank Lampard certainly seems to have some of the bounce back in Everton of late and they produced a fine display at Goodison Park this weekend to see off Leeds United.
The former Chelsea and Derby manager has won two of his first three games in charge of the Toffees. The two wins have both come at Goodison, and it’s clear Lampard wants to turn Everton’s home turf into something of a fortress.
Against Leeds, Lampard made some big selection calls in his XI. Donny van de Beek was given a start in midfield, while at the back, Jonjoe Kenny played outstandingly well. And Lampard, speaking to Everton’s official channels after the game with Leeds, was full of praise for Kenny.
“Jonjoe is another one in the two weeks (Lampard has been there) who comes with the attitude in training. I love that. He comes in every day, he loves Everton. Wants to give everything, any drill, any session we do in training, and he’s a quality player”, Lampard said of Kenny.
“Both feet technically very good for a defender. Positionally will give you everything, was great in keeping his discipline then jumping out to win tackles. I felt that with Jonjoe. He’s perfect for any game but for a game like today, he was perfect. Really pleased with him.”
Kenny, 24, has returned to Everton after a loan spell with Schalke last season. He has made just the five appearances for the Toffees this season, but delivered a fine display against Leeds.
TBR’s View: Kenny Seizing Chance Under Lampard
Certain players respond to a new manager bounce and Kenny looks to be one of them with Everton. He was brilliant against the Whites and could well stake a claim for a regular start now.
With Lucas Digne sold to Villa, left-back is a spot up for grabs. Kenny, then, has done himself no harm whatsoever in impressing against Leeds this weekend.
