'I'm surprised': Frank Lampard left absolutely fuming with one Liverpool player against Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard admitted he was fuming with the decision not to look at Virgil van Dijk’s late challenge on Amadou Onana today.

Onana was the victim of a late and high looking challenge from the Liverpool defender, who was simply awarded a yellow card and the decision not even sent to VAR for any sort of review. At the time, and looking at the initial replays, it did look like Van Dijk got away with one.

And Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports, claims he was left baffled by the decision to even go and look at Van Dijk’s tackle again.

“There were some things said last season that were negative about my players and decisions we got the wrong end of. I love Virgil van Dijk. As a player he’s fantastic, sometimes you mistime tackles and they are bad. If you look at the moment he connects with Amadou up on his shin and Amadou’s foot is on the ground, then I’m surprised it’s not gone to VAR,” Lampard said.

“The referee hasn’t gone to look at it and hasn’t had the chance to make the correct decision. For me, it was a red card and of course that changes the face of the last 20 minutes or so. I just feel the referee got that one wrong.”

TBR’s View: Van Dijk Sees Red On Another Day

Lampard has a big point here really. Van Dijk’s tackle was late and high and there is a big chance on another day that another referee gives a red here.

Onana was lucky to escape a more serious injury and while Van Dijk might not have meant to tackle him quite as high as he did, he still managed to catch the Everton man really high.

Ultimately, this would have changed the game and Lampard is quite right to be aggrieved here.
