Frank Lampard has claimed that Mason Bennett’s stunning goal in last night’s 2-1 win over Wigan reminded him of Gareth Bale’s goal in last season’s Champions League Final.
The Derby boss made the claim to Derbyshire Live, following the Rams’ first win in five league matches.
Things had looked to be going awry for Lampard’s men again.
Gavin Massey had given the Latics a half-time lead but goals from Bennett and Scott Malone secured a vital win.
The 22-year-old has struggled with injury this season and has largely been restricted to substitute appearances.
Last night he offered a timely reminder of what a bright future he can have, however, by leaving Pride Park stunned.
Lampard was delighted and likened his strike to that of Bale’s last year.
He told Derbyshire Live: “It was an incredible strike – the last time I felt like that at a game was at the Champions League Final when Gareth Bale scored the overhead kick.
“The goal was similar. Of course, it wasn’t a Champions League game it was Wigan at home but it was similar in terms of the moment.
“It was a special goal and he should savour that.”
Bennett will hope to use the moment of magic as the catalyst to kick on and get his career up and running at Pride Park.
It is fair to say that since coming through the academy his first-team chances have been somewhat restricted.
Lampard has shown faith in the attacker though and on last night’s evidence things are on the up for Bennett.
Derby moved level on points with sixth-placed Bristol City following last night’s victory.
