Everton manager Frank Lampard has had his say on happenings this weekend as he touched on Emerson Royal’s red card for Spurs at Arsenal.
Emerson was sent off in the early kick off in the Premier League this weekend. A late tackle on Gabriel Martinelli ensured Spurs were down to 10 men and never able to get back into the game at The Emirates.

Of course, Lampard himself was delighted to see his Everton side come from behind to beat Southampton. But the Everton boss couldn’t resist a dig at the officials after Alex Iwobi took a bad challenge late on at St Mary’s, with Lampard believing it was arguably worse than Emerson’s.
“He’s okay, it was a bad tackle. A bad one. He took a heavy whack. We saw a red card for that, or maybe less than that, or the same earlier in the day. But he’s fine,” Lampard said to Everton’s official channels.
Iwobi has been a breath of fresh air at Everton this season. A move into a more central role has given the former Arsenal man a new lease of life it seems.
Lampard, meanwhile, was clearly highlighting the inconsistencies with VAR and refereeing again. That’s something that won’t go away, no matter how well or bad his team are playing.
TBR’s View: Iwobi Lucky To Escape Injury
It would have been a nightmare for Everton had Iwobi picked up an injury. He’s been in such fine form that Lampard is now heavily reliant on his influence in the middle for Everton.
Of course, he got away with it and will just be a bit sore in training this week. But Lampard’s comments on VAR and the challenge by Tottenham’s Royal do hold weight.
Certainly, it won’t be the last time between now and the end of the season we see VAR come into question.
