'Incredible enthusiasm': Frank Lampard lauds Liverpool star's England performance
Former Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, was super impressed by Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson as he helped England to a 4-0 win over Ukraine.
Henderson was introduced in the second-half, coming on for Declan Rice who was on a yellow card.
The Liverpool skipper has fought his way back to full fitness and got his rewards with his first international goal last night. Henderson heading in a fine ball in from Mason Mount.
Henderson has seen both Kalvin Phillips and Rice take his place as regular starters for the Three Lions. But despite that, the Liverpool man has been praised for his attitude off and on the pitch.
And that was something that Frank Lampard picked up on last night.
Speaking on the BBC after the game was over, Lampard, along with Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, were full of praise for England.
However, it was the impact and attitude Henderson brought to the fold which Lampard singled out.
“I think the enthusiasm that Jordan Henderson brought on – and it’s not easy when you get to your 30s – because if you’re not playing and you’re looking at Rice and Phillips, you can easily come on and say ‘I’m not playing’,” Lampard said.
“He came on though with incredible enthusiasm. That’s nothing to do with tactics. That’s culture. It’s intention, and desire to run.”
Questions were raised when Henderson was even included in the squad.
Having missed a big chunk of the season, Southgate’s decision to take him was seen as a risky one. But what a move it’s been by the England boss.
At the end of the day, Henderson is a winner. He has experience at the very top and comes from a Liverpool side used to winning games. He is invaluable to this England team, and proved it last night.
