Frank Boya explains why he rejected Rangers move last summer

Rangers were linked with bringing a host of new names to Ibrox last summer,  in order to strengthen the options available to Steven Gerrard in Glasgow.

Rangers fans would have had a tough time keeping up with most of the Ibrox transfer gossip, such was the sheer volume of footballers reportedly catching Gerrard’s eye.

One name that did not come up regarding a potential Ibrox switch was Frank Boya. The Cameroonian was a free agent last summer but there was never any talk of a Rangers approach.

But the player has now confirmed that Rangers were interested but that he rejected a move to Ibrox.

Boya’s contract at Mouscron had just come to an end and he has told Derniere Huerre, as relayed by the Daily Record, that he rejected Rangers and Werder Bremen to join current club Royal Antwerp.

“The proof that I did well at Mouscron was the amount of offers I received from big clubs.

“I had no shortage of offers and Rangers and Werder Bremen were the most keen for me to join them.

“So leaving Belgium could have been a solution, but I wanted my future to be settled quickly and none of the teams interested have as much ambitions as at Antwerp.”

The 6ft 2ins midfielder has gone on to become a key part of his current side’s operation, and Rangers would undoubtedly have welcomed such a commanding presence in their own defensive midfield role.

It does not appear there is currently any interest in trying to lure the 24-year-old Cameroon international to Rangers again this summer.

But Gers fans are unlucky not to be enjoying the presence of the six-cap Indomitable Lions star.
