Foyth’s emergence eases Tottenham fears about losing Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld’s dwindling contract at Tottenham means that the prospect of his exit is constantly looming.

Daniel Levy’s elevated transfer demands meant that a deal didn’t get over the line, but it surely will at some stage; or Spurs face losing him for free when his current deal runs out.

That also means that his value is decreasing, and creates a tougher scenario for Mauricio Pochettino. He could well lose one of his experienced, regular starters and receive precious little – if anything – in the way of a transfer fee to replace him with.

With Alderweireld sure to attract attention in January, Spurs’ need to find a replacement is urgent; but it would appear that they’ve been able to source one from within their own ranks.

Juan Foyth has had to wait for his opportunities at the club after joining in January last year, but is now showing exactly why Pochettino brought him in.

He showed impressive character to recover from a tricky full debut against Wolves – where he gave away two penalties – to help Spurs keep a clean sheet at Crystal Palace on Saturday, getting the winner to boot.

His emergence must ease fears about losing Alderweireld, for little or nothing, as Spurs may hope to replace him from within.
