Having failed in their attempts to sign Red Bull Leipzig’s Naby Keita, Liverpool seem to have turned their attention to other suitable targets.
German outlet SportBild have identified Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches as the perfect player for Liverpool before they restart their pursuit of Keita in future windows.
However, Sanches would only be allowed to leave the German Champions on loan and Bild suggest Klopp has little interest in a temporary deal.
Instead, the former Borussia Dortmund boss wants Sanches, who is also being scouted by Chelsea and AC Milan, on a permanent basis.
Whichever means by which Liverpool acquire the European Champion, they will be getting a fine young talent readily available for first-team action, but what exactly would Sanches bring to the Reds?
Youth
Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have an old, experienced midfield, but none of his men are young either. Emre Can is the most youthful first-team midfielder at 23 years of age and Sanches is four years the German’s junior.
At 19, the Portuguese man is desperate to show the world his talents – something he would have expected to achieve by now at the Allianz Arena.
Nonetheless, after a year on the bench in Germany, Sanches would arrive at Liverpool fully motivated and his youth – and the willingness to impress that comes with it – could prove an advantage for the Reds next season.
Energy
Coinciding with his age, Sanches has relatively fresh legs as a 19-year-old, providing him with great energy, a factor Klopp looks fondly upon in a player.
The midfield man would be able to play a box-to-box role in Liverpool’s side, despite him being best as a deep-lying playmaker.
His stamina and running power are tremendous and the energy he would bring to Klopp’s side would be similar, if not great, to that of Naby Keita.
Star quality
There is a reason why Bayern Munich spent £30 million on the young prospect last season, and that is because he is a rare talent.
The Portugal international, who only made six Bundesliga starts over the last campaign, is impressive in every department. He can pick a pass, go beyond opponents and protect his own defence, and this gives him star quality.
The all-rounder also has many years to refine and improve his talent, making him an even more intriguing signing. How much more will he improve?
Value for money
While the fee Bayern may demand will be around £40 million, according to the Metro, Sanches is still a bargain.
For the player he is already, and the potential he has, the 19-year-old may end up tripling his current value in just a few years time.
If Liverpool were to spend £40 million on the midfielder – just over half of what Keita is likely to cost – they would sign a player that could develop into one of the best in the world.
