Four reasons Arsenal should retain the services of Jack Wilshere

Jack Wilshere. He hasn’t had it easy at his boyhood club. The Arsenal midfielder has spent vast amounts of time watching on from the sidelines during his long stay at the Emirates.

Now 25 years of age, Wilshere should be thriving in his prime, but instead, he finds himself on the fringes of the Arsenal team and out of the England squad.

After his loan spell at Bournemouth was prematurely curtailed after suffering a broken against Tottenham back in April, the midfielder returned to Arsenal having made limited progress.

Once one of the most heralded young English players, the Stevenage born midfielder is facing the potential of a permanent move away from the Emirates. With offers received from Sampdoria and Antalyaspor, as reported by the Independent, Wilshere is not short of admirers.

However, the Englishman is keen on remaining in London and reports from the same source suggest West Ham are interested in signing the England midfielder. It appears that Arsenal would not experience problems offloading their man.

But why should Arsenal keep Wilshere? Could he displace the likes of Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey in midfield? Here are four reasons why the Gunners should keep hold of their longest serving player.

Wilshere is Arsenal through and through

No one can question Wilshere’s loyalty and dedication to the North London club. It is hard to rid memories of the midfielder standing up high, singing anti-Tottenham songs. If nothing else, Wilshere is a fan of the Gunners.

From every dilapidating injury he has suffered, he has never given up. No matter the setback, Wilshere has returned. Be it six weeks or nine months, Wilshere’s desire to play for the club has never wavered. Arsenal need players who bleed the club colours.

His desire and fight is exactly what Arsenal need

Arsenal have been somewhat lightweight in the midfield department over the last decade or so. The days of Patrick Viera are very much over.

Despite his relatively short stature, Wilshere has always been a battler. Sometimes this has been a downfall, throwing himself into challenges which have resulted in injuries. Who can forget the confrontation between Wilshere and Marouane Fellaini, as Arsenal and Manchester United sparred at the Emirates. The midfielder simply refuses to back down.

Mesut Ozil may be the best technical player that the Gunners have, but he lacks the physical aspect of his game. Arsenal need battlers, people who throw their bodies on the line for the cause. Wilshere possesses this trait, which is rare at Arsenal.

On his day Wilshere is one of the best play makers Arsenal have

Roll the clocks back a few years to Arsenal versus Norwich City at the Emirates. Wilshere combines with Olivier Giroud, using a couple of incredibly intricate flicks, to score what turns out to be one of the best goals the stadium is ever likely to see. A goal that any player would be happy to score, the moment of brilliance cemented Wilshere’s place as one of Arsenal’s technical best.

The Englishman has shown he is more than capable. At 19 years of age, Wilshere bossed the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta, as Arsenal defeated Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League, starring alongside stellar names like Lionel Messi and David Villa.

He is undoubtedly gifted. After playing just 141 minutes of football in an entire season, Wilshere was selected in Roy Hodgson’s European Championship squad. His talents recognised to the point where Hodgson opted to leave out Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater.

Wilshere on his day can make a difference. If fit and able, he should definitely be pushing for a starting position at Arsenal.

Wilshere is a fan favourite

Whatever happens with Jack Wilshere, he will always be loved on the red half of North London. Arsenal fans love their midfielder, from his style of play to his longevity at the club.

The 25-year old has been at the club for most of his life and has come through the club’s youth system. Having won the FA Youth Cup and FA Cup, Wilshere will surely be desperate to add a Premier League medal to his trophy cabinet.

Wilshere has the desire and the backing of the fans. If he can rid himself of the injury demons that continuously haunt him, Arsenal remains the best place for the talented midfielder.

Regardless of what happens, Wilshere will be adored by Gunners fans all over the world. Arsène Wenger, his teammates and the Arsenal faithful know he is capable. He has experienced great highs and extreme lows at the club, and there is no one who is more passionate about playing every time he pulls on the jersey.

Now all that remains to be seen is if Arsenal will keep patience with Wilshere, in the hope that he will fulfil the potential that he has teased on numerous occasions
