Tottenham may boast a World Cup winning captain and the winner of the Golden Boot, but another winner could be on his way to north London, according to reports, in the form of ex-Blackburn and Stoke man Steven N’Zonzi.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say that Spurs have entered the bidding for holding midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, who was a substitute in Sunday’s final as France beat Croatia.
The move could have a big impact on several men both in and outside the club, with these four affected more than most…
Mousa Dembele
There can be no doubting that Mousa Dembele is highly rated by Mauricio Pochettino, who didn’t hide his feelings earlier this season with the Belgian a key member of his midfielder. Yet The Sun claim that an exit is still possible.
“I have said before that he is a genius of football. I put him next to Maradona, Ronaldinho, Jay Jay Okocha. I think for me, he is one of the unbelievable talents in the history of football.”
As one of the older members of the squad and with only a year left on his contract, the arrival of another man in an already congested area of the squad could be the strongest indication yet that he is destined to leave before a ball is kicked at Tottenham’s new ground.
Eric Dier
Fresh from World Cup heartbreak with England where he was restricted to a bit part role as a substitute, Eric Dier could face another challenge at club level if the midfielder does arrive from Sevilla this summer.
2017/18 saw Dier make the fewest number of Premier League appearances he has made since his debut season in the Premier League in 2014/15 and whilst he will be keen to cement his spot in the side next season, a new rival would be an unwelcome challenge.
Unai Emery
The newly appointed Arsenal boss worked closely with Steven N’Zonzi as their spell together at Sevilla brought Europa League success to southern Spain and Le 10 Sport claim that the Gunners man was keen on a reunion.
Upon reflection, it’s hard to imagine that Emery would be disappointed with his transfer business so far this summer, but it will be a bitter blow to leave a potential target, one who is experienced and he knows well, to his biggest rivals.
Victor Wanyama
After stuttering through the 2017/18 campaign, the Kenyan midfielder would have been hoping for a relaxed summer to rebuild his fitness and combat 2018/19 head on. The arrival of N’Zonzi could throw a major spanner into the works and could pose a threat to what he may believe is a clear route into the starting line-up.
Wanyama clearly has Pochettino’s backing, having brought him to White Hart Lane from Southampton, but this could be the clearest indication yet that his place is at risk after a disappointing season.
