Wigan will not be the last side in this season’s Championship to be taught a footballing lesson by Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.
Of course there’s no guarantee that stylish football will carry them all the way to promotion but the words of fellow pros are as good as indicator as you can get of how good they are and how difficult it is to play against them.
That’s why Adam Forshaw’s comments after the 2-1 win at the DW Stadium on Sunday are so telling. After Nigel Adkins’ effusive praise for the Whites last month, an unnamed Wigan player has got in on the act.
Speaking after the game, Forshaw said: “I spoke to one of their lads who I’ve played with and he said we’re the first team to come here and really pass them off the park.”
Set aside the other reservations about whether it will last and accept it; just like Wolves last season, Leeds are playing the best football in the Championship, on another level to anyone else.
Professionals know when they’ve been handed something of a footballing lesson, when their opponents are operating at a different level and Wigan were on the receiving end of that.
