‘Formidable’ midfielder is now set to snub Newcastle United move in January

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has picked between Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United and Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus.

That is according to The Daily Mail, which has claimed that Phillips was open to a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer of 2023.

So, what has been reported about Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look.

Kalvin Phillips wants Juventus, not Newcastle United

Well, according to The Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from Premier League rivals Manchester City in the summer transfer window.

The report has claimed that Newcastle are among the clubs who have “registered interest” in the former Leeds United midfielder.

However, Phillips wants to join Juventus over Newcastle. The report has claimed that the England international midfielder is open to moving to the Italian club and adding “extra qualities” to his game to enhance his chances of playing for the Three Lions at the Euro 2024 finals.

The Daily Mail has noted that despite Newcastle’s interest in Phillips, “the chance to play in Turin under Massimo Allegri appeals”.

Juventus want to sign the 28-year-old on a loan deal, and that appeals to the midfielder.

The Daily Mail has noted that Phillips was open to a move to City’s Premier League title rivals Liverpool in the summer of 2023.

Liverpool are reportedly still keen on him, but I do not think that the Citizens will let the midfielder go to Anfield. Arsenal have also been linked with Phillips.

Blow for Newcastle

I believe that Kalvin Phillips would be a brilliant signing for Newcastle United. Sandro Tonali is banned, and the Manchester City midfielder could just replace him in Eddie Howe’s starting lineup.

So, Phillips picking Juventus over Newcastle is a blow for the Magpies. They now have to find someone else who is as good and capable as the City midfielder, who was described by City Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, on the club’s official website as “a formidable talent”.
