A former senior figure at Tottenham could now reportedly play a key role in hiring the next England manager after Gareth Southgate’s departure.
The north London side have been influential with the success of the Three Lions during Southgate’s tenure as England boss, with Harry Kane born and raised in Tottenham as the striker became his nation’s captain and new leading goalscorer.
With the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Dele Alli all key England internationals in the last eight years, Tottenham have been key for Southgate and the 53-year-old’s impressive run on the touchline for the home nation.
And a former Tottenham staff member will be key in deciding who is appointed as Southgate’s successor.

Former Tottenham academy manager John McDermott now FA technical director
As per the Athletic, the FA’s current technical director is John McDermott, who spent 15 years at Tottenham building up the academy and playing a massive role in bringing through the likes of Kane, Winks and Ryan Mason.
With the report outlining that McDermott is very close with Mauricio Pochettino, there’s a real chance that the former Tottenham official could make contact with the Argentine coach to gauge whether or not the Spurs icon will be interested in taking on the England job.
Indeed, Pochettino has already emerged as an early favourite for the position, alongside Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, who could be viewed as the more popular option given his recent work with the Toon.
Yet with McDermott in a position of real power and having close ties with Pochettino, there’s a real chance that the former Tottenham man could be interviewed for the job, a decision that might split England supporters.

Pochettino could be ready for the England job this summer
Having played an influential role himself in helping England succeed under Southgate with the development of Kane and others at Tottenham, Pochettino could feel like he’s ready for the job this summer.
The Argentine’s surprise dismissal at Chelsea at the end of last season could mean a quick return to football for Pochettino, who might view England as the next logical step in his career.
And with McDermott key to appointing the next Three Lions boss, Pochettino could be in with a real shot making the final shortlist, with the former PSG man a good candidate for the position this summer.
