Former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi lauded Sean Longstaff and Ayoze Perez when asked for his standout Magpies players this season.
Youngster Longstaff burst onto the scene earlier this season and impressed massively in central midfield before his unfortunate knee injury against West Ham United.

The injury means he will only have made nine Premier League appearances but it was enough to leave an impression on Ameobi, who said on Stadium Astro: Sean Longstaff who’s injured at the moment, the young kid who’s come in. He’s been a revelation for us this season.”
Ameobi then added: “Another one is Ayoze Perez. The last six of seven weeks, he’s been outstanding for us. He’s really taken the mantle, him and [Salomon] Rondon, since [Miguel] Almiron has come in.”
Perez has indeed been in brilliant form for the Toon Army, scoring 12 goals in total this season.

Like last season, the Spaniard has played a key role in the Magpies’ successful navigation away from relegation.
He is currently lapping up the praise but hasn’t always been appreciated by fans for being too inconsistent.
TBR’s view
The two players that Ameobi singled out have certainly done well for the Magpies, especially Perez whose goals have been crucial.
Perhaps though, Fabian Schar could have been worth a mention.
Last summer’s signing from Deportivo La Coruna has been consistently brilliant for Newcastle, showing excellent defensive solidity and also an impressive ability to play out from the back.

Isaac Hayden, who has previously stated his desire to leave the club, is another who should be commended for his efforts this term.
He’s in a difficult situation, but has handled himself with fantastic professionalism. His form has been superb, which has forced Rafa Benitez to keep Jonjo Shelvey out of the team.
