Former Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer reportedly training with Aston Villa

Former Millwall goalkeeper Jordan Archer is training with Aston Villa as he steps up his attempts to find a new club, according to the Daily Mail.

The 26-year-old free agent, who has a senior cap for Scotland, is apparently set to spend the international break practicing with the Premier League club.

The report says he will train alongside Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland under the watchful eye of Villa goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

There is no suggestion in the report that Archer will be signing for Villa, and Dean Smith already has four stoppers on his books.

TBR’s View – Villa don’t need Archer but nothing wrong with helping him keep fit

At a push, perhaps if Villa were to offload Nyland and Lovre Kalinic, Archer could be brought in as a third choice stopper.

But in the circumstances, they really don’t need him and the supporters would likely be encouraged at the lack of suggestion Archer will be signing on the dotted line.

That said, there’s something to be said for helping an out of contract professional get back to his best and being an environment in which he feels he can improve.

Surely Villa have learned their lesson in terms of stockpiling goalkeepers, even if Tom Heaton has had to pull out of the England squad with an injury.
