Former Liverpool man credits Reds for Barcelona display despite 3-0 defeat

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona at the Nou Camp to leave their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

Goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi (2) have left the Reds a mountain to climb at Anfield next week.

Jurgen Klopp dropped Trent Alexander-Arnold to the bench in favour of starting Joe Gomez, and deployed Gini Wijnaldum as a false nine.

The bold setup looked to be working during the early stages, but the clinical Catalan giants had too much in the end for the visitors.

Barca deserved to win, although Liverpool did have some excellent chances on the night and one man who feels they were slightly unlucky was former Red Don Hutchison.

The ex-midfielder Tweeted on Thursday morning: “I’ve just watched the whole 90mins again. I guess this sums the game/result up. Liverpool played unbelievably well! Penned Barca in.

“Barca scored a great goal. Mane Milner Firmino Salah missed big chances. Then the best player on the planet went through his gears.”

TBR’s view

On another night the result might have been different.

Liverpool, as Hutchison says, did actually play well on the night but Marc-Andre ter Stegen was equal to their best chances.

Had they been more clinical, they might have been taking a crucial away goal back to Anfield.

That all said, Barca were worth the victory and might have even taken a 4-0 lead had Ousmane Dembele scored his chance in the closing stages.
