Leeds United put on an impressive display against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the FA Cup on Monday. Despite losing 1-0, the Championship side more than held their own. Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford is confident that they can thrive in the Premier League.
Marco Bielsa’s side are currently sat top of the Championship. They are looking good for promotion back to the top division of English football for the first time since 2004 and Beckford feels they will have no problem staying there.
When speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ”Everybody that has seen the first half against Arsenal will say absolutely the team has more than enough to thrive in the Premier League. Leeds have more than enough.”
Bielsa has got Leeds playing an impressive style of football that is taking the Championship by storm. The high intensity, possession-based method makes them very hard to play against and break down.
The former Whites striker was keen to mention this: ”Having watched Leeds for a number of years under Marcelo Bielsa, you understand that’s his game plan, that’s how he likes to play. It doesn’t matter which one of their personnel are playing, the manager will always find a way to play the ‘Leeds United Way’.”
What Bielsa has done for this Leeds side is clear to see and it will be fascinating if they do achieve promotion to the Premier League. It will be a big step and it is yet to be seen whether the style of football they currently play will be consistently effective against top-level opposition.
