Former France international Anthony Reveillere praises Rangers after Lyon clash

Rangers picked up an impressive win in their first real pre-season clash yesterday. The 2-0 win over quality opposition will no doubt have excitement high at Ibrox, especially as Rangers were reduced to 10 men early on after Ryan Kent’s silly red card.

Other than that blemish Steven Gerrard is likely to be over the moon with the display and Rangers can certainly take plenty of positives from the performance.

Their opponents, Lyon, are a traditional powerhouse in French football and are currently leading Juventus in their Champions League tie, so it is quite an eye-catching result for the Glasgow side.

Indeed, one former Lyon player was impressed by Rangers’ display in the Veolia Trophy clash.

Anthony Reveilleire is a multiple champion with the French club, winning Ligue 1 on five occasions. The 20-cap Les Bleus international reviewed the game for the club’s website and was clear in his assessment that Rangers fully merited the result.

“We had a good first 15 minutes with link-up play and establishing a sense rhythm. We conceded goals on fine margins. It was a matter of vigilance.

“We were caught out and Rangers gained confidence. They then played their game on the counterattack. We continued to push with many crosses. We haven’t done enough combination play in small spaces. Glasgow has controlled this match.”

Rangers fans should no doubt be pleased by the display. For periods Gerrard’s men really dictated the play against strong opposition and the hope will be it is a precursor to a successful Scottish Premiership title bid.

If Rangers can bring performances like this to Ibrox regularly throughout 2020-21, they might have a chance of preventing that much-feared 10 in a row.
