A former Everton youngster, who Roberto Martinez tipped for the top, has found himself a new club in rather surprising surroundings.
Matty Foulds joined Everton from Bury in January 2016 for a fee reported by the Liverpool ECHO to be in the region of £225,000.
A ball-playing centre-half who came in from the Football League, immediate comparisons were made to John Stones, who at the time was thriving at Goodison Park. Indeed, the ECHO suggested Everton had plans for Foulds to be a first-team option within two years.
“Matty Foulds has all the attributes to be a very good ball-playing centre-half,” then Everton boss Roberto Martinez told the club website. “We feel very excited about him joining in January.”
Unfortunately, Foulds did not live up to those expectations.
Whilst he was a pivotal figure in David Unsworth’s successful under-21 team injury problems stunted his progress whilst continuous changes to first-team coaching will not have helped his development either.

This summer, he was let go at the end of his Everton contract and has been on the hunt for a new club since.
But rather than rocking up in the lower leagues of English football, Foulds is looking to kickstart his career with an exciting move to Italy.
Foulds has joined Serie C outfit Como 1907, joining the likes of Lewis Walker, Amrit Bansal-McNulty, and Derek Agyakwa in switching English football for life on the lake. Quite literally, there are very few more breathtaking stadium locations in European football, even if the ground itself is in need of repair.
“For me it is really a great and stimulating occasion,” Foulds told the Como club website. “I am very happy to be part of this group and having to confront myself with a new reality and a different football is really intriguing. I am ready to give my contribution.”
Everton fans will certainly wish the player all the best in his new adventure where he can hopefully showcase some of the promise that made Everton swoop back in 2016.
