The former Everton defender Alan Stubbs has launched a defence of Marco Silva, claiming he is still the right man for the club going forwards.

Silva is under pressure at the moment having lost nine of the last 15 games.

The Toffees sit ninth in the Premier League table but some sections of the Goodison Park faithful are unhappy with the club’s recent form.

According to Stubbs, Everton chiefs must have faith in the Portuguese.

“I don’t think chopping and changing the manager is the way forward”, he said on talkSPORT. “He’s been there for two windows, but he’s only been there for one window in terms of buying because we didn’t bring anyone in last month.

“I think he’s got to see the season out, try to get some results along the way to try to help the situation and then he’s got a big summer.”

Stubbs is right, Silva must be backed

As frustrating as it is to go on a bad run, Silva should receive the backing of his superiors.

As Stubbs says, Everton are still in their first season under his guidance.

He spent big in the summer and needs a full season under his belt before true progress can be made.

Surely the Toffees do not want another repeat of last season whereby they sacked someone (Ronald Koeman) just months after they spent big.

Stability is what is required. Silva’s defensive record is admittedly quite discouraging – the 18 goals conceded from set pieces frankly alarming (via BBC Sport). But Everton aren’t in danger of being relegated nor do they have enough to break into Europe.

Silva should be backed as it makes little sense to change at this point. It’s also worth remembering Everton even allegedly tapped Silva up while he was the head coach at Watford (Harrow Times) – he is the man they really wanted to take them forwards.
