Former England under-20 goalie Ted Smith trials at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have goalkeeper Ted Smith training with the club this summer.

A Tottenham Hotspur under-23 side took on Ebbsfleet yesterday in a clash that finished 2-2. But some Tottenham fans would have been surprised with the name of the goalkeeper.

Tottenham fielded a trialist for the game. It has since emerged that former Southend United stopper Ted Smith was that man.

As reported by the Basildon, Canvey and Southend Echo, the stopper has been training with Tottenham Hotspur this week.

The former England under-20 goalkeeper is a free agent having been released by Southend this summer. The 23-year-old was briefly the number one keeper at Roots Hall in the 2016-17 campaign but has more recently been a back-up option. Last season he played just once, in an EFL Trophy defeat to Portsmouth.

Smith is however highly-rated. He has previously trialed at Southampton and played alongside current Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Winks during his time with the England youth set-up.

It is unlikely that Smith is being considered for the Tottenham first-team, although they did lose Michel Vorm this summer. Smith is more likely seen as a replacement for the departed Tom Glover in a battle with Brandon Austin for the Spurs under-23 spot.

Time will tell if Smith can do enough on trial to earn a contract at Tottenham this summer.
