Former Celtic prospect Aidan Nesbitt has struggled since Parkhead exit

Last summer Celtic fans were left disappointed by the decision of one of their most promising youngsters to leave the club. Aidan Nesbitt decided he was no longer prepared to wait for his first-team opportunities at Parkhead and left the club. The attacking midfielder, who was the club’s academy player of the year in 2016, was once tipped for a first-team future with Celtic.

But, after just one appearance for the Glasgow side, he headed to MK Dons in League One to work with former Hearts boss Robbie Nielsen.

Of course, the young man who once scored a hat-trick in a Youth Cup final v Rangers, was hoping to prove a point to Celtic. Whilst he loved the club, he would have liked to show just why he deserved more opportunities at Celtic Park.

But it has been a struggle for the 21-year-old in England so far.

MK Dons, who were tipped for promotion by many at the start of the season, were relegated to League Two after a tumultuous campaign. The manager who brought Nesbitt to the Stadium:MK, Nielsen, left in January. Nesbitt has also had to battle injury trouble throughout the season and, by and large, has not been a regular in a poor campaign for his new team. Nesbitt started just five times for the club in the league and he played the whole 90 minutes just once for the club this season.

Celtic had high hopes for Nesbitt once and deciding to let him move on to MK Dons would not have been an easy decision for them in the summer.

However, nearly a year on, it does not seem immediately apparent that Celtic made a mistake in letting him go.

The young midfielder will now hope he can remain fit next season and thrive in League Two as he tries to make it south of the border.
