Former boss believes Jake Hastie should have stayed but understands Rangers switch

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson has been discussing Jake Hastie’s move to Rangers this summer.

The talented winger agreed to head to Ibrox in May on a pre-contract agreement. According to Football Scotland, Rangers are expected to pay a £355,000 compensation fee for the signature of the 20-year-old on a four-year contract.

It came after an impressive 2018-19, initially on loan at Alloa Athletic and latterly back at Fir Park for the end of the campaign.

But his former boss clearly believes Hastie should not have made the move this summer. Speaking to the Daily Record, Robinson believes that Hastie would have been better served remaining with Motherwell for the foreseeable future.

However, he did also concede that Rangers are a ‘world-class’ club and that he understood the decision.

“I think he should have stayed at Motherwell but he signed for a world-class football club so it’s hard to tell a young boy not to.

“I have no hard feelings towards any boy who leaves. That’s their prerogative, I was a player once myself.”

Hastie will face a tough time getting regular first-team football at Rangers. He made his debut in the 6-0 second-leg thrashing of St Josephs but was subsequently dropped from the Europa League squad for the two-legged tie with Progres Niederkorn.

But undoubtedly Hastie is a signing for the future from Steven Gerrard and Rangers fans will hope he can steadily grow into an Ibrox hero.
