Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has backed Tottenham’s Dele Alli to get himself back on form after he was once again left out of the England squad.
Gareth Southgate named his final squad of 2019 yesterday and Alli, 23, was excluded having lost his way somewhat this season but Parlour was keen to point out his quality – as well as the fact he has plenty of time to get into the plans for Euro 2020.
He told TalkSport: “He’s got keep working hard and worrying about his Spurs career. That will get him back into the England squad. Still loads of time. He’s lacking a bit of belief and confidence. That will come back because he’s a quality player.
“His stats are unbelievable, up there with Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard. Once he starts playing well, Gareth’s a fair man, he’ll know when it’s right to put him back into that England squad.”
TBR’s View – Alli needs to decide which type of midfielder he wants to be
Comparisons between Alli and the likes of Gerrard and Lampard indicate his ability as a box-to-box midfielder, with a wide skillset.
That has seen him deployed in a variety of midfield roles; from the very advanced 10 role he first took up at Tottenham to more disciplined, deeper ones.
He needs to decide where he wants to play and get on such good form that Mauricio Pochettino has no choice but to play him there.
That will help him get back in the England squad, where a creative fulcrum in a 4-3-3 is still needed. Ross Barkley is the current incumbent and Alli is a far superior player when on top form.
