‘For me’…£47m Ten Hag signing tipped to replace Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United captain

Manchester United got over the line against Everton yesterday but questions keep being asked of both Erik ten Hag and skipper, Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes scored from the spot to set the tone for the game before allowing Marcus Rashford to take the second penalty to seal the game.

The Portuguese skipper has had his critics this season. Alan Pardew has told Erik ten Hag to drop the midfielder, while Chris Sutton has also slammed Fernandes at times.

And speaking ahead of the game yesterday alongside former Red Devil Danny Simpson, ex-Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford questioned some of Fernandes’ antics as captain, before suggesting Andre Onana is the only one who could really replace him.

Speaking to Stadium Astro just before kick off yesterday, Beckford had plenty to say about Fernandes, but conceded that £47m signing Onana is perhaps the only candidate to replace him.

“For me, I’m looking at players that are robust. Players that are physically going to fit on a regular basis, and to be honest they don’t have them. But the one you would say, is a regular has to be the goalkeeper but he’s just joined. But he’s going to be a consistent voice, a voice that everybody is going to hear on a regular basis,” Beckford said.

Bruno Fernandes needs more help

It’s a big deal being Manchester United captain. And while Beckford made some good points about Fernandes and some of his diving antics, he does perhaps need a bit more help.

This United side simply doesn’t have the leaders in there and that’s quite telling in that the only suggestion for the role was new signing Onana.

Naturally, Fernandes still contributed in the win yesterday. But he’ll continue to have critics.

United, then, could do with signing a few more big characters. That way, the dressing room and leadership will take care of itself.
