Ian Wright has defended Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Davinson Sanchez following the criticism aimed his way in wake of Spurs’ weekend defeat.
The 24-year-old was in Tottenham’s starting XI for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City.
Spurs had a day to forget as Pep Guardiola’s charges ran out 3-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium, with Rodri opening the scoring from the penalty spot and Ilkay Gundogan netting a brace.

For City’s third goal, a long ball from Ederson left Sanchez and Gundogan in a foot-race, and the latter spun his opponent, who fell to the ground.
Sanchez tried to block Gundogan’s shot with his head, but it was to no avail as the Germany international slotted past Hugo Lloris.
Since then, the £42million man has gone viral over a photo that shows him face-planting the turf.
Wright defended Sanchez, telling Wrighty’s House Podcast: “I heard you lot talking about Davinson Sanchez and it was a fantastic point about defenders not caring what the meme is going to be.
People want to laugh at people all the time, but they [defenders] are doing what they do.
All he [Sanchez] is trying to do is second guess because Gundogan is in total control once he’s bearing down on goal.
“People laughing and saying that he’s face-planted and this and that, it just makes me feel like ‘for Christ sake’.”
TBR View:
Credit to Wright for standing up for one of his peers after one of his mistakes was transformed into a meme.
You’d struggle to find many players who haven’t made an error or ended up looking a bit silly in a game over the course of their career.
