In a fight between a Tiger and a Black Cat, what would win? Relegation six pointer alert!
According to some, Jermaine Defoe’s penalty against Bournemouth which earned Sunderland their first Premier League win of the season was enough to save David Moyes from the axe. Indeed, The Black Cats have had a simply abysmal start to the new campaign and prior to their victory on the South Coast a fortnight ago it looked increasingly likely that relegation was all but a certainty and that the former Everton and Manchester United boss was set to look for a new job. However, those much needed three points gives Sunderland hope, but if they are truly to fight and claw their way to safety then they will need to see off their fellow relegation candidates, starting with beleaguered Hull City on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, after a promising start to the season, which saw Mike Phelan rightly earn his first permanent managerial role, Hull City simply fell apart and picked up just one point from seven Premier League fixtures. Relegation looked a certainty, however, much like Sunderland, a surprise victory prior to the international break, against Southampton, suddenly gives supporters hope of survival once more.
The up-coming fixture between Sunderland and Hull City is a classic ‘relegation six pointer’ and you sense that both teams will be desperate to secure three points and that a draw, certainly for Sunderland, will simply not be enough. Look out for a managerial change at the club that loses this fixture come Sunday morning.
