Liverpool proving their title credentials on the South coast
Liverpool have made a flying start to the new season and are the early pace-setters in what has the potential to be one of the closest Premier League title races in recent years. Jurgen Klopp has re-moulded and re-energised the red half of Merseyside and The Reds genuinely look like the real deal as they go in search of a first league championship in sixteen years. The charismatic German coach has installed a fluent, free-flowing attacking style of play that has resulted in his side scoring thirty goals, more than any other club, and a temporary place at the summit of English football.
On Saturday Liverpool face a trip down to the South coast when they take on Southampton in a game that will act as an accurate barometer of how far the team has progressed under Klopp and if they will be able to maintain their early season form. It is one thing to dismantle lower-mid-table clubs on home turf at Anfield (they have comfortable beaten Hull City 5-1 and Watford 6-1 in recent months) but being able to grind out a result on the road against clubs of Southampton’s standing will be key if The Reds are to truly challenge for the title. A victory would prove that Liverpool’s current position at the top of the Premier League is not a false one.
