Kyle Walker – Tottenham

(Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa)

After breaking into the Tottenham Hotspur team at the end of the 2009-10 season, Kyle Walker was sent out to Queens Park Rangers at the start of the following season to gain more high-level playing experience.

After returning to Spurs after a successful spell at Loftus Road where he made 20 appearances, Walker was sent out on loan again, this time Premier League side Aston Villa.

Walker’s time at Villa was also a success and he scored his first Premier League and senior goal during his time there.

He made a total of 20 appearances for Villa scoring two goals and, upon returning to his parent club, expressed an interest to move there on a permanent basis.

This notion was swiftly rebuked by Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who then offered him a new contract and installed him into the first team.

Jesse Lingard – Manchester United

(Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton, Derby County)

Although Jesse Lingard had been included in Manchester United’s match day squad on occasion since 2011-12 he hadn’t made a competitive first team appearance for the side.

In order to gain vital match experience, Lingard was loaned out to Leicester City for a month in 2012 making five appearances.

He was then loaned out to Birmingham City at the end of 2013 where he made 13 appearances scoring six goals which were his first senior goals.

Lingard was only back at United for a month before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion on a 93-day-loan where he appeared 17 times and scoring four goals.

After making his first team debut in Louis van Gaal’s first game in charge of Manchester United at the start of the 2014-15 Lingard was unfortunately injured and lost his place in the team.

He was then loaned out to high-flying Derby County in February 2015 until the end of the season where he made 14 appearances and scoring two goals before returning to United and finally establishing a first team place.

Joe Hart – Manchester City

(Tranmere Rovers, Blackpool, Birmingham City)

Having already featured for Manchester City in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 season, Hart was sent out on loan to Premier League side Birmingham City for the 2009-10 season when Shay Given was brought to the club.

Although Hart had a shaky start he was superb throughout his spell at Birmingham and went onto win the club’s player of the year award.

He was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award (which was won by James Milner) and he also earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year for that season.

Jermain Defoe – Sunderland

(Bournemouth)

Goal-scoring machine Defoe was shipped out to Second Division side Bournemouth for the season in 2000-01 having made just the one appearance for West Ham in the League Cup.

Defoe’s time at Bournemouth was a huge success and he ended up scoring 18 times in 29 appearances including 10 goals in 10 consecutive games.

Upon returning to West Ham, Defoe was put into the first team and was the club’s top scorer in his first full season despite being used primarily as a substitute.

Jordan Henderson – Liverpool

(Coventry City)

Two months after making his Sunderland debut, Jordan Henderson was loaned out to Championship side Coventry City on a one month deal.

Henderson’s performances for the side were so impressive that the club extended the loan spell until the end of the season.

Although he scored his first senior goal during his time at Coventry, his time there was unfortunately cut short after a metatarsal injury and he returned to Sunderland.
