A late winner from Gary Cahill against Stoke City – 18th March
Having been unconvincing for weeks, Chelsea kept on grinding out results against lesser opposition without really looking like they deserved score lines that seemed to hint at comfortable victories. Despite a good start, Jonathan Walter’s equaliser from the penalty spot looked like they could have paid the price at the bet365 Stadium.
Chelsea huffed and puffed but could not find a way through a resolute Stoke defence, with Diego Costa misfiring and too many Chelsea attackers forgetting their shooting boots – as became a regular scenario later on in the season. Fortunately for them, up stepped Gary Cahill in the dying moments of the game.
Cahill pounced on a loose ball eight yards out from a corner to give his side the lead, but the meaning of the goal was clear as it sparked wild celebrations amongst the players and made a statement of intent that they had no intention of tiring in the second half of the season.
