Even though they were still losing games with him in the team, Rio Ferdinand would have been a big presence in the side when he signed for them on a one-year contract in the 2014/15 season.

Joey Barton is another player who would have been vocal with the team and often told them what they needed to do in order to improve but he has since moved on to Championship rivals Burnley, who are currently 4th in the league.

Without big characters like these in the squad, they are lacking a certain amount of experience, direction and composure that is required in order for the team to pull through in difficult games and defend sufficiently in order to maintain a lead.
