Dries Mertens (Napoli)
Wait, do Liverpool not already have two Belgian strikers? Yes, but neither of them pose the same goalscoring threat as 28-year-old Mertens. The Napoli forward is also versatile in that he can play either as a target man, a wide player in a front three or as an attacking midfielder behind a number nine.
Like the other players mentioned on this list, his ability is not in correspondence with the number of first team opportunities falling his way in 2015/16. Mertens is mostly a substitute with the current Serie A leaders, and although his goal tally for this season doesn’t look encouraging (just one in the league), he is a sharp finisher and also poses a threat from set pieces. Plus, he is mobile and unselfish enough to contribute in terms of attacking build-ups as well as a focal point, something that will please Klopp.
Whether Napoli would want to let him go, and whether he would want to give up a Serie A title charge for a hopeful punt at finishing in the Premier League’s top four, casts doubt over any possible signing. Nonetheless, Liverpool have nothing to lose by at least making an enquiry about Mertens.
