Shane Long (Southampton)

The tabloids have informed us that Liverpool have already tried to capture the Southampton striker, with the Saints turning down an £8million bid for the Irishman. That shouldn’t deter Klopp from upping the price to try and get him to swap Hampshire for Merseyside.

It has been well publicised that Liverpool’s recent history of buying players from Southampton has been rather chequered, but none of those players who made the move north would suit this current Liverpool team better than Long. He is a reliable source of goals, yet he has never been a fixed presence in Ronald Koeman’s first team, and his attitude, work rate and movement would make him an ideal fit for Klopp’s style of play.

So long as Daniel Sturridge is injured, Liverpool do not have a dependable striker to call upon. Divock Origi has potential but still a lot to prove, while Christian Benteke simply does not look like being the answer. The Reds will have Danny Ings to come back into the frame, but not until next season, by which stage their problems could be even worse than at present. Long is well worth pursuing and could be the man to turn a wasteful team’s draws or losses into much-needed wins.
