Lukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund)

Like Subotic, the Polish defender has proven his worth at Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles and impressing in the club’s run to the 2013 Champions League final under Klopp, only to find himself largely out of favour this season.

Piszczek is not as glaring a candidate to be bought in January, as he operates at right-back as opposed to the centre of defence and Nathaniel Clyne’s place in the team is not in any imminent danger. However, he can switch to the middle of a back four if the situation requires, and he would also bring a reassuring presence to a Liverpool defence which could very well do with it.

Although Clyne and first choice left-back Alberto Moreno wouldn’t be top of too many Liverpool fans’ enemy lists, neither has been an unqualified success and the glaring lack of competition in the full-back positions, primarily brought upon by the long-term injuries to youngsters Jon Flanagan and Joe Gomez (nominally a centre-back but also capable of playing on the flanks), would make Piszczek a good fit for the Reds. Also, if both him and Subotic were to arrive, their experience of playing together with Dortmund should ensure a comforting sense of cohesion at the back for Liverpool.
