Five possible January signings that could reignite Liverpool’s push for the top four

After 22 matches in this season’s Premier League, Liverpool lie 9th in the table. That is simply unacceptable for such a big club that has spent so much money in the last few transfer windows, and with more than half of the season played, it cannot be dismissed as an aberration that will ultimately be set right. The Reds have never finished lower than 8th since the Premier League was formed, but in 2016 it is a worrying possibility that their finishing position could have double figures.

Still, with the Reds eight points adrift of 4th-placed Tottenham and 16 matches still to play, a push for a Champions League qualification spot isn’t entirely out of the question, particularly if Jurgen Klopp’s men actually put together a good run of form, something we haven’t seen from Liverpool since a 13-game unbeaten spell this time last year.

In order to harbour any ambitions of rescuing a faltering season, though, the German needs to get into gear quite rapidly in what remains of the mid-season transfer window. Defender/last resort striker Steven Caulker, on loan from Championship side QPR, has been the only Anfield arrival since New Year’s Day, and with Liverpool’s squad in need of surgery, both immediate and long-term, failure to bring in more players between now and the end of the month would leave a possible surge for the top four looking highly improbable.

Ask any Liverpool fan where the team needs strengthening and most will give three answers – a goalkeeper, a dominant centre-back and a reliable striker. In the following article, I have identified five possible signings that Klopp could make to inject some badly-needed spark into Liverpool’s latest anti-climactic season.
