Five players Newcastle United should target this summer ahead of their Premier League return

Terence Kongolo – Feyenoord

Newcastle had a reliable centre back partnership for the Championship with Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark, with good support from Chancel Mbemba, but Benitez will want to improve in that position.

Eliaquim Mangala has been mentioned, by the Manchester Evening News, as a target and he would represent a big-name signing that could thrive under Benitez. However, a better option for the Magpies may be to target a young centre-back that can be moulded by the manager.

Terence Kongolo has been excellent for Feyenoord for a few seasons now and played a big role in their Eredivisie title win. He is comfortable at either centre-back or left-back, which will appeal to Benitez who needs improvement in both positions.

The Dutchman is comfortable in possession and can launch attacks from deep, while he is an assured defender that could cope with the physicality of the Premier League.

It would be an ambitious signing, but it is now the right time for him to leave the Eredivisie and a move to St James Park could suit all parties.
