Five players Liverpool should sign this summer to push on domestically and in Europe

Liverpool progressed during the 2016/17 season and earned a top-four finish, which will see them return to the Champions League.

Their record against the rest of the top six was superb, but they struggled in the matches against the lesser teams and regularly dropped points.

That is a problem that they need to address this summer. It could be argued that they have the weakest squad of the top six clubs, which means that Jurgen Klopp needs to add quality over the coming months.

Here are five players that the Reds should target during the upcoming transfer window…

Virgil van Dijk – Southampton

The Reds have been frequent shoppers on the South Coast during recent seasons and they could return with a raid on Southampton this summer.

Virgil van Dijk is a priority target for Klopp and the Mirror report that they have an edge in the race to sign him, due to the defender wanting to play under the German coach. There is interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, but it is believed that Liverpool are currently his most likely destination.

Despite their strong end to the season defensively, they do need to improve at the back, as they conceded more goals than all but one top six side. Van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and is ready to step up to the top end of the division.

He is tall, powerful, quick and possesses a good eye for a pass to launch an attack. The Dutchman is the complete package and would improve any side in the division. It would be a great signing for the Reds.
