Five losers of deadline day feat. Arsenal attacker and Chelsea

Deadline day wasn’t as action packed as many believed it would be. There were plenty of players on the move in the Premier League and there were others that didn’t complete the moves that they thought they would be making. There will be a few that will go to bed this evening with a real sense of disappointment. Here, The Boot Room choose our five losers of the day:

Alexis Sanchez

The Mirror reported that Arsenal had accepted an offer from Manchester City for him worth £60 million, but the move fell through. It was clear throughout the window that he wanted to leave and he will now have to be at the Emirates Stadium for the next few months at least. The supporters might be happy that he is staying, but he might not be motivated to perform.

Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk was a priority target for the club all summer and they didn’t bring him in. This summer, it was crucial that they strengthened their defence during this window, but they failed to do so. The defender will have to stay at Southampton and won’t be happy about that after the way he has acted during recent months.

Although Chelsea look like they are going to make a couple of signings, they missed out on two targets. Fernando Llorente looked like he was headed to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the day, but he ended up at Tottenham. Another target that they missed out on was Ross Barkley. Sky Sports report that he rejected a move to the champions.

The newly-promoted team couldn’t manage to sign a striker, despite it being obvious that they needed one. The injury to Glenn Murray has left them short up front and they will struggle for goals as the season progresses. There will be many fearing for them now.

Newcastle United

Rafa Benitez has spoken about his unhappiness at the transfer window, but he would have expected late business to strengthen the squad. Nobody arrived on deadline day and the Spaniard’s future will be in doubt as a result. Mike Ashley has sold him a false dream and it could lead to his departure during the coming days.
