Two and 32- efforts on goal and touches in the opposition half by Everton’s starting strikers

As if the one shot on target throughout the Everton team wasn’t enough, this dissects the route cause of the problem. Ronald Koeman partnered leading goalscorer Romelu Lukaku and on-loan West Ham man Enner Valencia, but they were deprived of the service they needed to make any real impact against the Reds.

In the first-half, that was perhaps to be expected as Everton pressed against a Liverpool side geared towards playing the ball around, but in the second-half they failed to up their gear and dropped further and further back, leaving the two isolated and seeing little of the ball outside their own half. Valencia and Lukaku only had 32 touches of the ball inside the opposition half between them, and only managed two efforts, Enner Valencia seeing an effort blocked on the edge of the box, before Lukaku shot high and wide in the second-half.

Lukaku’s night of frustration was later capped off, when, as it looked like he’d managed to bundle through on goal beyond Dejan Lovren, he dawdled for too long in possession, allowing the tackle to come in from Emre Can.

Everton would ultimately manage six efforts on goal with just the one on target. Liverpool managed 11, hitting the target with four.
